Project Description

This infrastructure improvement initiative involves the rehabilitation and replacement of aging sanitary sewer lines across multiple locations within the Richmond Flood and Wastewater District. The primary objective of the project is to enhance the reliability of the regional sewer system by replacing existing vitrified clay pipe (VCP) with modern high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and PVC piping. This transition to more durable materials is designed to mitigate the risks of sewer overflows, discharges, and leaks, thereby ensuring long-term environmental protection and public safety.

The project utilizes advanced trenchless technology, specifically pipe bursting, to replace existing pipelines with minimal surface disruption. In areas where trenchless methods are not feasible, open-cut excavation is employed to install new PVC SDR 26 piping. The scope of work also includes the comprehensive rehabilitation of maintenance holes, the replacement of lower lateral cleanouts (LL) and District cleanouts (DCO), and the restoration of trench pavement to City of Richmond standards.

Stringent construction management protocols are being followed to maintain continuous sewer service and public access throughout the project duration. Extensive coordination with local utility companies and the City of Richmond Public Works Department is required to verify underground utility locations via potholing and to manage traffic control. Upon completion, all impacted surface features, including traffic striping and survey monuments, are restored to their original or better condition.
