The project involves the design and engineering of a ventilation layout specifically for a laundry area that includes a toilet and bath. This includes conducting analysis and calculations to properly size mechanical equipment, such as ceiling-mounted exhaust fans. The scope also requires the provision of a supply diffuser to be tapped into the existing ductwork and the installation of weatherproof roof caps with backdraft dampers.

Project Description

This project involved the professional design and engineering of a specialized ventilation system for a residential laundry and bathroom facility. The primary objective was to provide a comprehensive mechanical layout that ensures optimal air quality and moisture control within the high-humidity zones of the residence. The scope included the strategic placement of ceiling-mounted exhaust equipment and the integration of new components with existing structural elements to maintain a seamless building envelope.

The engineering phase required rigorous analysis and calculations for the precise sizing of exhaust equipment. Two primary units were specified: a 50 CFM ceiling-mounted exhaust fan for the bathroom and a more powerful 200 CFM unit for the laundry area to handle increased moisture loads. The design utilized Broan-certified equipment and included detailed specifications for ducting, including 4″ to 3″ reducers and flexible ductwork routed to weatherproof roof caps with built-in backdraft dampers.

To ensure long-term performance and compliance, the system was designed in strict accordance with the California Mechanical Code (CMC) and California Building Energy Efficiency Standards. The project requirements mandated a complete air balance report after construction to verify that air delivery quantities remained within 10% of the design specifications. This meticulous approach ensures that the finished installation provides efficient, quiet, and code-compliant ventilation for the occupants.
